On July 6, 1944, six-year-old Nancy was sitting in the bleacher section (the "blues") to the right of the bandstand when the fire broke out. She and her family escaped by going to the top row of seats and sliding down the side poles and ropes.
Nancy R. Savin was born in Hartford. She graduated from Connecticut College for Women with a degree in Voice and Music History and attended the Julliard School of Music in New York City. She holds a master's degree in music education from the University of Hartford and taught elementary vocal music in the West Hartford Public Schools. She also worked as the producer/host of numerous arts documentaries and hundreds of arts features for Connecticut Public Television from 1977 - 1990 and 1998 - 2002.
